We are aware that there is little empirical research to date on the effects of virtual worlds on childrens cognitive development, let alone the development of the creative imagination. With this review of the extant literature, and our proposed mechanisms for how virtual worlds disrupt childrens normal development, it is our hope to suggest a testable hypothesis, and generate interest in further research. The displacement hypothesis that we herein propose has a long provenance in the literature and is an extension to new media theories for which there is already much empirical support. Healy 1998: 17 reminds us that echnology shapes the growing mind. The younger the mind, the more malleable it is. The younger the technology, the more unproven it is. The rapid development of new and untested technologies operating on younger and younger minds for longer and longer periods of time is in many ways itself a great experiment, and there seem to be good reasons to believe that it is an ill conceived one, with potentially serious consequences. Until further research has been done, we conclude that childrens storytelling through the use of virtual worlds should not replace more traditional methods of storytelling that more fully engage the childs creative, imaginative, and cognitive processes. Instead, that particular $400M venture capital bet was placed on Zynga, a San Francisco, California based developer of social gaming applications. Best known as the company that brought MafiaWars and Farmville among the ranks of the most popular Facebook games ever, Zyngas growth has been nothing short of remarkable. In addition to its ability to attract the attention of venture capitalists Japans Softbank, for example, invested $147M in July Zynga is also active with acquisitions it makes on its own. In August of 2010, Zynga acquired Unoh, a Tokyo company specializing in mobile game development. Of course, Zynga has plenty of competition out there when it comes to Facebook game and applications development. Companies like Avenue Social, the creative source behind popular Facebook games like Cold War Clambake, could well be the next target venture capitalists place in their sights. With the continued success of social media related companies like Facebook, Zynga and Avenue Social, there could be a lot more venture capital directed toward mobile communications and the Internet in general. And at the current pace, it wont be long before the most well funded companies on the planet are either directly involved in social media, or using it as their primary means of promotion and marketing. There is no longer any room for skepticism when it comes to the influence social media is now exerting over everyday commerce. The popularity of social media sites continues to grow exponentially, and online retailers are embracing that fact instead of fighting it. Before too long, everyone may be accessing favorite online merchants exclusively through Facebook or MySpace.

If any of this sounds familiar, then this will help. One reason PBL might be hard for some teachers to start is that theres just so much stuff out there about it. Who has time to wade through it all?To solve this problem, I went out in search of the clearest, most authoritative information on PBL and put together a collection of materials that will help you get your feet wet, plus links to more resources for when youre ready to dig deeper. The easiest way to explain PBL is to compare it to what we think of as traditional instruction: In a traditional classroom, we deliver content to students, give them opportunities to practice or apply what they learned, and eventually conduct a summative assessmentthis could take the form of a test or it could be more of a performance assessment, like an essay, a speech, or a project of some kind. Careful, though: The project in many cases is often something like a poster that merely regurgitates the facts students were taught in the unit. With project based learning, the content is baked inside of a long term project, a real world problem students need to solve in a creative and authentic way. In the process of solving the problem, students also meet required standards, but this work is integrated into the project, not separate from it. Take the study of viruses, for example. A PBL project might ask students to educate their peers on the best ways to prevent the spread of viruses in school. To do this, they would need to study microbiology to understand how viruses work, research prevention tools, then use their writing and speaking skills to determine the most effective means to convince their peers to change their habits; this may come in the form of a video or poster series. This video is part of a series called 5 Keys to Rigorous Project Based Learning.

To say that we are disappointed in those students who partook in these activities is an understatement. There is no justification for putting themselves and other at significant risk, the letter stated. Our administrators, faculty, and staff have worked tirelessly to get us to the place where we have been able to open our schools for those ready to return. Officials said students named at these gatherings will move to remote learning starting Tuesday for a minimum of 14 days, meaning no student will be permitted to return to an in person hybrid schedule prior to Oct. 13. Additionally, students will be prohibited from participating in any athletic or other school activities on campus. Prior to being allowed back in school, students will be required to submit a letter of clearance from their health care provider or the Westchester County Department of Health. Those who dont wont be allowed to return to the campus, officials said. The list of students who attended these gatherings will also be shared with the WCDOH, which will cross reference the list of those in attendance with those already forced to quarantine last week. If its determined that there were students currently quarantined in attendance at the event, the WCDOH and police will combine efforts to take whatever action is deemed necessary. With the district taking herculean efforts to maintain safety and follow proper health protocols in school during this pandemic, officials pressed that the community needs to stand together to prevent another outbreak from happening.
